Jessica Boklan, MD is the co-founder of ACTION and the director of oncology research at Phoenix Children’s Hospital (PCH).

Dr. Boklan’s research career began prior to college, with participation in the Jackson Laboratory student training program and later, for other original work, winning the prestigious Westinghouse National Science Talent Search. Dr. Boklan went on to receive her bachelor of arts degree in biochemical sciences at Harvard University in 1990, where she spent two years conducting laboratory research, culminating in an honors thesis, into the biochemistry and molecular biology of cancer.

Dr. Boklan continued to research other aspects of cancer biology while attending medical school at New York University School of Medicine. Following residency training in pediatrics at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Dr. Boklan did her fellowship training in pediatric hematology/oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) and New York Hospital. During that time, she renewed her laboratory research, concentrating in the areas of hematopoietic stem cell biology, gene therapy, and new biologically targeted cancer treatments. As a clinical scholar in biomedical research, Dr. Boklan spent additional time at MSKCC as a postdoctoral research fellow. Her research has resulted in numerous publications and presentations at national and international meetings.

Dr. Boklan joined the hematology/oncology department at PCH in 2001, where she directs the oncology research program. She is an assistant professor of clinical pediatrics at the University of Arizona and an associate member of the Arizona Cancer Center. Dr. Boklan’s special research interests are in new drug development for cancer treatment, and, in particular, improving treatments for leukemias and other bone marrow disorders. Dr. Boklan is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society, the Myeloid Disease Committee of the Children’s Oncology Group, the American Association for Cancer Research, the American Society of Hematology, and the American Academy of Pediatrics.
