Raised in Florida, Karen received her bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Florida in Gainesville, where she discovered an interest in research while working on her honors thesis in diabetes. She later worked as a research coordinator at Shands Hospital in Gainesville, coordinating clinical trials involving children and family members with diabetes. While in Florida, Karen worked as a staff nurse in general pediatrics, hematology/oncology, and liver and kidney transplant. Karen relocated to Phoenix in 1999, where she initially worked at PCH as a staff nurse in hematology/oncology. In 2002, Karen completed her master’s in nursing at Arizona State University. Since then, she has been working as a certified pediatric nurse practitioner in general pediatrics as well as the research nurse of the PCH pediatric hematology/oncology department. Karen is an active member of the Association of Pediatric Oncology Nurses (APON), the Children’s Oncology Group (COG) and the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners (NAPNAP).
