A native of Pennsylvania, Dr. Etzl received his bachelor of arts in biology from LaSalle University in Philadelphia followed by his medical degree from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. After his residency training in pediatrics at Emory University, he completed a fellowship in pediatric hematology/oncology in 1979 at Children’s Hospital National Medical Center. From 1978-1983, Dr.Etzl practiced general pediatrics in Massachusetts. In 1983, Dr. Etzl came to Phoenix where he initially joined a private pediatric hematology/oncology practice until 1987, when he joined PCH. Other hospital affiliations in Phoenix have included Desert Samaritan Hospital, Good Samaritan Hospital, St. Joseph’s Hospital, Maricopa Medical Center, and Children’s Rehabilitative Services. In addition, Dr. Etzl has served as a consultant at multiple institutions including Barrow’s Neurologic Institute. Dr. Etzl is very involved and committed to pediatric cancer research, particularly in brain tumors. He is an active participant in the Pediatric Neuro-Oncology Consortium as well as the Children’s Oncology Group. He is a member of the American Society of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology, the Arizona Pediatric Society, the East Valley Pediatric Society, the Phoenix Pediatric Society, the Board of Trustees of the Arizona chapter of the Leukemia Society of America, and is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
