Paul Baranko, MD is the founder of the department of pediatric hematology/oncology at Phoenix Children’s Hospital (PCH). He has recently stepped down as department chairperson after serving in that position for more than twenty years. Dr Baranko’s special interest is in leukemias and kidney tumors.

Dr. Baranko received both his bachelor of arts in medical sciences and chemistry and his medical degree from Indiana University. His residency training was done at Indiana University as well as St. Joseph’s Hospital in Phoenix. Following residency, Dr. Baranko served as a captain in the United States Air Force and was chief of pediatrics at Luke Air Force Base. Dr. Baranko went on to complete his fellowship in pediatric hematology/oncology at Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles in 1971. From 1971-1982, he was a consultant in pediatric hematology/oncology at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Phoenix before becoming founder and director of the pediatric hematology/oncology department at PCH in 1982.

Dr. Baranko is a clinical professor in the department of pediatrics at the University of Arizona. He is currently the principal investigator at PCH for the Children’s Oncology Group (COG). Prior to its recent incorporation into COG, Dr. Baranko was an active member of the Children’s Cancer Group (CCG), involved in multiple committees, including the Affiliates Steering Committee, the Protocol Efficiency Committee, the National Wilm’s Tumor Strategy Group, the Cancer Control Committee, and the Executive Committee. Dr. Baranko is a member of the American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, the Section on Hematology/Oncology of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Arizona Academy of Pediatrics, and the Maricopa County Pediatric Society.
